When we witness a wastewater treatment plant turning turbid sewage into clear water, or when we worry about the health of a river, a key indicator is playing a crucial role behind the scenes. This indicator is BOD5, which stands for "five-day biochemical oxygen demand." This term, while sounding technical, is in fact a core benchmark for assessing the condition of the aquatic environment and guiding water treatment processes.

In simple terms, BOD5 measures the amount of oxygen consumed by microorganisms as they decompose organic pollutants in water. The "5" here represents a standard testing period: a water sample is sealed and incubated for five days under specific, constant temperature conditions. The reduction in dissolved oxygen over these five days is then measured. The greater the amount of oxygen consumed, the more organic matter is present in the water that can be easily "eaten" by microorganisms.

 

You can think of it this way: microorganisms in a water body are like a team of cleaners. They need to breathe oxygen to break down organic matter. This leads to a sharp decline in dissolved oxygen, which can cause fish kills and result in the water turning black and odorous. This ensures that microorganisms have sufficient oxygen to carry out the purification work. Aeration is a major energy-consuming part of wastewater treatment, making precise control crucial.

 

A reference for process selection: By comparing BOD5 with other indicators (such as COD, which will be discussed later), the biodegradability of the pollutants in the water can be determined. This helps in selecting the most appropriate treatment technology.

In water quality analysis reports, BOD5 often appears alongside another indicator, COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand). Understanding the difference between them is crucial:

 

COD: Represents the total amount of all organic substances in the water that can be oxidized by a strong chemical oxidant, regardless of whether they can be broken down by microorganisms. It is like a fast, comprehensive "catch-all" census but cannot distinguish the "biological toxicity" of the organic matter.

 

BOD5: Specifically refers to the amount of oxygen required over five days by microorganisms to decompose the biodegradable portion of organic matter. It is more like a targeted investigation of "digestible material." Although it takes longer, it better reflects the actual impact of pollutants on the ecosystem and the feasibility of biological treatment.

 

In short, COD tells you "how much total pollution there is," while BOD5 reveals "how much of that pollution can be naturally purified or treated by biological processes." The ratio of these two values can help determine the biodegradability of the wastewater.

 

► IV. Why Specifically "Five Days"?

You might wonder why the standard test period is set at five days. This is mainly due to a practical balance. The process of microbial degradation of organic matter varies in speed: in the first two to three days, readily degradable substances like sugars and fats are consumed rapidly. Afterward, the degradation rate slows down significantly as it shifts to more complex substances. A five-day period is generally sufficient to capture the oxygen consumption process for the majority of readily biodegradable organic matter, without making the testing cycle so long that it compromises the timeliness of the results. Of course, this also means that BOD5 primarily reflects the "readily degradable portion." The pollution potential of some recalcitrant (hard-to-degrade) organic matter needs to be assessed in conjunction with other indicators.
